If you’re looking for a new heating system in the middle of winter, chances are you’re in a bit of a hurry. Either your current heating system is in the process of breaking down, or has already given up the ghost entirely. In your rush to restore heating to your home, though, it’s important that you don’t overlook systems that might fit your needs better than just installing any system that fits. Geothermal heating is one of those systems that you should consider.
Geothermal Heating
A geothermal heating system is a heat pump, which means that it can actually provide both heating and cooling functions. It does this by evaporating and condensing refrigerant to move heat from one place to another. Unlike air source heat pumps, though, a geothermal heat pump relies on thermal energy collected from underground.
It does this by using a pipe loop filled with water, which is buried on the property somewhere between 15 and 30 feet deep. At that depth, the temperature remains around a constant 60 degrees Fahrenheit despite the conditions above ground.
Advantages of Geothermal Heating
The main issue with air source heat pumps is that they rely on ambient thermal energy in the air outside. As the weather gets colder, there is less thermal energy for the system to use. This causes the efficiency of the system to drop. This is not the case for geothermal systems, as they have a practically limitless supply of geothermal energy available to use. Geothermal systems are also much more energy efficient than normal heating systems, as they don’t have to burn fuel to generate heat.
