A series of individual air handlers are installed throughout the house, one in each room that is to receive heat. Each of these air handlers has its own thermostat, which allows it to be controlled separately from the others. Up to four air handlers are connected to a single outside unit. When in heating mode, the outside unit evaporates refrigerant to absorb thermal energy before sending it inside to the air handlers. The air handlers then condense the refrigerant back into liquid to release the heat into the home. Ductless heating systems can also reverse the flow of refrigerant through their systems, which enables them to provide cooling as well as heating modes.
