When it comes to renewable energy and "green" energy, the first thing that comes to mind for many people is solar and wind energy. A lesser known source of renewable and "green" energy lies right beneath our feet – geothermal energy.

Mongomery County Geothermal Tip

Since geothermal heat pumps use the constant temperature of the earth instead of the outside air temperature, they are able to reach very high efficiencies. While a geothermal heat pump can be up to 600 percent efficient on the coldest days of the year, a normal air source heat pump will only be 175–200 percent efficient on cool days. Because they are so energy efficient and have such low operating costs, many homeowners are turning to geothermal systems to heat and cool their homes. Talk to your contractor today to find out if a geothermal system would work for your home.

Geothermal heat pump systems can provide 100% of our heating and air conditioning needs and a large portion of our domestic hot water requirements while consuming a fraction of the energy when compared to conventional systems.

In fact, there are over 1,000,000 geothermal heat pumps in use in the United States today and approximately 50,000 are installed in residential applications each year.

American homeowners are clearly warming up to the fact that green geothermal energy is available anywhere in the United States – literally in their own back yard, thanks to geothermal heat pumps.

A geothermal system does not create heat by burning fuel like a gas or oil furnace does. Instead, it collects heat from within the earth during the winter months and displaces heat back to the earth during the summer months using a sealed piping or "loop" system. This energy from the earth is 100% renewable.

Also, unlike gas and oil heating systems, there are no flues or chimneys and no carbon monoxide concerns.

Studies show that approximately 70% of the energy used in a geothermal heat pump system is renewable energy from the ground.

In fact, the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy have determined that geothermal heat pumps have the lowest environmental impact of all heating systems and they reduce energy consumption and corresponding pollution emissions by up to 72% when compared to electric resistance heat and conventional air conditioning systems!

Geothermal Environmental Benefits Environment

The E.P.A. has determined that geothermal
heat pump systems have the lowest
environmental impact of all heating systems.

Geothermal energy is a naturally renewable energy source and friendly to the environment.

The greenest heating and cooling system available, geothermal energy has the most potential of any known energy source. To further increase geothermal energy use, the U.S. government is offering federal tax credits for new geothermal heat pump installations. Tax payers can receive a tax credit equal to 30% of the installed cost of a geothermal system! Consult your tax preparer.

Geothermal heat pump systems harness the free and renewable energy of the earth. A geothermal heating and cooling system, sometimes called a ground–source heat pump, works on a simple premise: the earth below the "frost line" (usually about four feet down) is a constant temperature of about 50° year round. Heat can be taken from the ground and transferred through a heat pump to the air in your home during the winter. Heat can also be transferred back into the ground during summer to cool your home.

The use of the earth’s constant temperature allows a geothermal heat pump system to reach efficiencies of up to 600% in extremely cold temperatures, more than double that of conventional heat pump systems!

A large subdivision utilizing geothermal heating and cooling systems in lieu of conventional heating and cooling would have the following environmental impact:

  • An annual reduction of 3,800,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
  • An annual reduction of over 19 Billion BTU’s of fossil fuel.
  • That fossil fuel reduction would eliminate the need to import 10,245 barrels of crude oil, (or 430,290 gallons of crude oil).
  • The associated reduction energy usage would reduce annual carbon emissions by over 760 metric tons.
  • The impact of these reductions would be equivalent to taking approximately 600 cars off the highway or planting 382 acres of trees.

According to data provided by The United States Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, a typical 3 ton residential geothermal heating and cooling system produces an average of about 1 pound less CO2; per hour of use than a conventional system. If just 100,000 homes across the United States were converted to geothermal heating and cooling the following environmental effects would be realized:

Annual CO2; emissions would be reduced by 880 million pounds. This would be equivalent to eliminating auto emissions from nearly 60,000 vehicles.

This would also be equivalent to planting over 120,000 acres of trees. Currently, residential geothermal heat pump systems in the United States:

  • Produce an annual savings of 5.2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity usage.
  • Reduce fossil fuel consumption by 26 trillion BTU’s.
  • Eliminate nearly 8 billion pounds of CO2;.

Those 650,000 geothermal heat pump installations have provided the environmental equivalent of:

  • Removing emissions produced by 840,000 vehicles.
  • Planting 250,000,000 trees.
  • Reducing the reliance on oil imports by 14,000,000 barrels per year.

We only use the best products! A core philosophy at Carney All Seasons is that there are 3 major critical components to a high quality and long lasting geothermal system, quality products, quality installation and quality design. When evaluating products that we recommend to homeowners, we are very thorough. Often, a product will be installed at our facility or in one of our homes long before we offer it to a customer. Why? We want to be sure that we’re recommending only the best to you and your family.

The difference is in the installation! Having a new geothermal heating system installed is much different than nearly every purchase that a homeowner will make for their home. The parts are shipped to us from our distributors, loaded onto our trucks and then assembled in your home. You will often hear a Carney All Seasons employee say "The most important day in a geothermal heat pump’s life is its first day." This is because it is critical that thorough and precise installation procedures are followed. Even the highest quality products must be assembled and installed properly in order to maximize energy savings, enhance system performance and ensure years of trouble free comfort.

How do we know what size geothermal heat pump will work? A major critical component to a high quality and long lasting geothermal system is the first step, system design – what size geothermal system is needed? Our friendly and experienced Comfort Specialists evaluate your home and perform engineering calculations to determine the proper sized geothermal system for your home. Factors include the age of the home, insulation levels, window quantity and quality, size of the home, orientation of the home, ceiling height and many, many more. It is not uncommon for two homes that appear nearly identical in the same neighborhood to have different heating and cooling requirements, we see it frequently. That’s why we never "guess or assume" what size geothermal system is right for your home. Our goal is to provide an energy efficient geothermal heat pump system that maximizes your comfort and minimizes your energy usage. That’s why each geothermal heat pump system that we install is custom designed for you and your home.

Do you know who’s in your home? Carney All Seasons employees must pass criminal background checks and random substance abuse tests. This helps ensure that the people that we send to your home are ones that you will be comfortable having there. We use floor saver "booties" and drop clothes to protect your home.
