Have you noticed any strange noises coming from your air conditioner since you started using it this summer? If so, you probably have a problem. Usually, the reason that an air conditioner starts making strange noises is because there’s a problem with the system. Let’s take a look at some of the more common problem noises that air conditioners make, and what they mean.
Grinding
The air handler is the part of the air conditioner that circulates air throughout the house during operation. In order to compensate for the friction generated during operation, the air handler motor is outfitted with oiled bearings. These bearings will wear down over time, causing the friction on the system to increase and producing a loud grinding sound. If you hear that sound, you should call for repairs before the air handler motor burns out.
Gurgling
Gurgling and hissing noises coming from your air conditioner indicate that there are air bubbles in your refrigerant line, which means that you have a leak somewhere in the system. An air conditioner is not supposed to lose refrigerant, as it simply recycles it back and forth during normal operation. A leak in the refrigerant line will drain the system of the fluid it needs to operate. Eventually, the refrigerant level will drop so low that the system will break down entirely. If you don’t want to spend quite a bit of money on repairs later, you should call for a professional as soon as you hear this sound. The sooner the refrigerant leak is patched, and the lost refrigerant refilled, the better off your system is going to be.
