Why Size Matters with Your Air Conditioner

If you’re looking for a new air conditioning system for your home, there are a lot of different factors that you need to consider. One of the most important factors to consider is size. The size of an air conditioner has a huge effect on how effective it is, how long it lasts, and how often it’s going to develop problems. Let’s take a look at why your air conditioner needs to be the right size.

Oversized

An oversized air conditioner is going to have too much output for the home in which it is installed. This will cause the thermostat to shut the system down before it has the chance to complete a full cycle. Short cycling has a number of negative effects on the air conditioner. First, the efficiency of the system will drop because it can’t complete the cycle. Second, the amount of wear and tear on the system will increase significantly. This will both cause problems to occur more frequently and shorten the overall lifespan of the system. If you install an air conditioner that is too large, you will find it more expensive to operate and shorter-lived than a normal system.

Undersized

An undersized system is going to have to stay on for far longer than it was designed to do in an attempt to cool the home. This has the same effect as if the system were forced to short cycle. The air conditioner will become less efficient, be damaged more easily, and will need to be replaced years sooner than normal. If you want your air conditioner to last as long as possible, please make sure that it’s properly sized for your home before you install it.
