If you’re using a furnace to keep warm this winter, you’re going to be putting more stress on it than during other times of the year. That means a greater chance for problems to occur, so it’s important that you keep an eye out for any signs that your furnace is in trouble. The faster you can get your furnace repaired, the more damage you can prevent. Let’s take a look at some of the common problems your furnace can run into.
Short Cycling
If the air handler malfunctions, or the air filter becomes clogged, it can cut off the flow of air into the furnace. This causes the internal temperature of the furnace to rise beyond established safety standards. As the system starts to overheat, the limit switch activates and shuts the furnace down to prevent damage. Once the furnace has cooled off enough, it will reactivate and try to resume heating. Without having the core problem solved, though, the furnace will just overheat again and shut down again.
This will dramatically increase the amount of wear and tear on the system, causing an increase in breakdowns and shortening the lifespan of the system. Make sure you call for repairs as soon as you notice your furnace turning on and off on every couple of minutes. Otherwise, you may find yourself replacing your system years sooner than you otherwise would.
Burner Assembly Issues
The burner assembly is the part of your furnace that combusts gas in order to generate heat. When the burner assembly burns gas, it causes carbon particles to collect on the jets. Over time, these particles can build up to the point where they prevent the jets from firing properly. Without the jets, the furnace can’t generate heat. If your furnace doesn’t seem to be turning on, call for repairs as soon as possible.
