Plumbing problems rarely have the common courtesy to occur during normal business hours. While inconvenient, though, it’s normally not a big deal to wait to have the issue fixed until you can schedule an appointment. It’s a very different story when it comes to plumbing emergencies, though. A plumbing emergency is any plumbing problem that cannot wait for a future appointment; it will simply cause too much damage in the interim. So, what are you supposed to do when a plumbing emergency crops up at 3 in the morning, or some other time outside of normal business hours? Follow the steps below to mitigate the damage as much as possible.
Turn Off the Water!
The biggest threat with plumbing emergencies is water damage, and it’s a threat you should take seriously. Even a small amount of water damage can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to repair. So, the number one priority in a plumbing emergency is to turn off the water. If you can’t find a way to turn off the water to that section of the house, turn off the entire thing. This will help mitigate any damage until you can get the problem repaired.
Clear the Surrounding Area
As a further precaution to limit water damage, you should clear the area around the plumbing problem of any furniture and other objects that might be damaged by water that’s already leaked. This has the added benefit of making the problem easier to access once your plumber gets there. You should then mop up any water that’s already spilled into the vicinity. Once, that’s done, you should find a company that offers emergency plumbing services and call them immediately.
