What Does the Thermocouple Do on My Water Heater?

Monday, July 14th, 2014

Without a water heater in your home, the miracle of indoor plumbing (“the best thing since indoor plumbing” is still one of the measuring sticks of progress) will not mean much. You need hot water for many daily activities, so a working water heater is essential.

But you also need a safe working water heater, and that’s where the thermocouple comes in. If you, like many homeowners, use a gas-powered water heater, the thermocouple helps prevent the heater from turning into a danger. But sometimes the thermocouple itself may need repairs and replacement, and for that you’ll need professionals in water heater repair in Doylestown, PA, like those at Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling. We offer same day service, satisfaction guaranteed, so make us your first call for restoring your malfunctioning water heater.

The job of the thermocouple

The thermocouple is a simple safety component made from two strips of different types of metal, joined at one end. The thermocouple is attached near the pilot light along the burner assembly, with the two ends of the metal placed in the flame of the pilot light, and the other end attached to a shut-off valve for the natural gas line that feeds gas to the burner. Should the pilot light fail, the thermocouple will automatically close off the gas line and prevent the combustion chamber from flooding with unburned gas, creating a major hazard of explosion from even the smallest spark.

The way a thermocouple does this task is through a principle known as the “Seebeck Effect.” The Seebeck Effect describes how two different types of metal in proximity to each other will create an electric current when exposed to heat. The higher the heat, the stronger the current. This makes a thermocouple a crude temperature sensor. As long as electric current runs through the thermocouple because of the heat of the pilot light, the current keeps the valve open. If the pilot fails, so does the current, and the valve automatically closes.

Not all water heaters use a thermocouple. Some of the more recent models use a mercury sensor to shut off the gas valve. An electric water heaters don’t use gas at all, and therefore doesn’t need any kind of emergency gas shut off.

Thermocouples can fail and require replacement. To make sure that your water heater remains safe all year long, have a yearly maintenance visit from a professional to detect any troubles such as failing thermocouples.

The experts at Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling can help you with maintenance and any water heater repair in Doylestown, PA that you need. Call us today.

Reasons to Install a New Thermostat

Friday, May 16th, 2014

We often take our thermostats for granted, and can easily underestimate how valuable they are. They essentially act as a control system for your entire heating and air conditioning unit, allowing you to set the temperature you like and even turn the heat or air on and off at specified times of the day. You can replace your thermostat very easily with help from a trained professional, and when it comes to new thermostat installation, Doylestown has numerous qualified companies standing by. The reasons to install a new thermostat are varied, but usually boil down to one of the two following variations.

The most obvious reason is that your old thermostat is experiencing trouble. Problems with thermostats will cause your heat or air conditioner to turn on at inappropriate times, to run longer or shorter than they should, or to keep you from turning them on at all. It can end up costing you quite a bit of money when your air conditioner runs on and on, or alternately leave you bereft of cool air just when you need it the most. A new thermostat can correct those problems and restore full control of your system to you.

Beyond that, you may want a new thermostat just for the added upgrades that newer models can provide. Most models these days are programmable, but you can install thermostats with even more features, such as the ability to turn it on and off remotely with an app on your phone, or a “smart” system that analyzes your cooling patterns and makes adjustments to help save you money. Such features may be worth the cost of an installation, and since only the thermostat itself is affected, the operation can be completed comparatively easily.

You may have plenty of your own reasons to install a new thermostat, and if you do, then Carney Plumbing, Heating & Cooling is here to help.

When it comes to thermostat installation, Doylestown residents can count on us to do the job right the first time, every time. Contact us today to set up an appointment. You’ll be glad you did!

Replace a Centralized Furnace with a New Air Conditioning System

Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

You may look at the title of this post and squint your eyes. “Huh? Why would I replace a furnace with something that does the exact opposite of a furnace? Besides, I already have an air conditioning system.”

However, what we’re proposing makes more sense than you may realize… if the air conditioning system you use to replace your furnace is a heat pump. A heat pump is, essentially, an air conditioner: it operates through the same action of cycling refrigerant from a compressor and through two sets of coils to move heat from one place to another. But there is this important difference: through a component called a reversing valve, a heat pump can change the direction it moves heat and work as a heating system as well. Instead of removing heat from inside of a home, it moves heat inside from the outside. You won’t need a furnace (or boiler) with a heat pump in your home.

When you’re looking for air conditioning system replacement in Doylestown, PA, come to Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling first. We will help you determine if a heat pump will work as your year-round comfort solution.

Why replacing a furnace with a heat pump is a good idea

We’ve already mentioned the main heat pump advantage: you have cooling as well as heating. This means you only need to install one system and it takes up less space than having an air conditioner and a furnace packaged together.

A heat pump, aside from delivering cooling at the level of the best air conditioners, provides more energy-efficient heating than a furnace. A furnace must burn fuel to generate heat, where a heat pump uses a modicum of electricity to run its mechanisms to move heat. Government studies have shown that a family of four will save, on average, 30% from their heating bills over a winter after the switch from furnace to heat pump.

Heat pumps are also safer. If you have concerns about a gas furnace overheating or leaking toxic carbon monoxide, you won’t have any worries with a heat pump. Heat pumps don’t even have hot exteriors that children might hurt themselves on.

Professional installation of heat pumps

So many home comfort systems receive improper installation, and this accounts for the majority of their repair needs. If you want to replace your furnace with a heat pump, only rely on trained professionals with a long history of air conditioning system replacement in Doylestown, PA. Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling has handled installations for over 30 years, and we can do the job for you fast and right the first time.

How Plumbers Use Snakes for Drain Cleaning

Monday, February 17th, 2014

The drain snake, also called a drain auger, is one of a plumber’s best friends. These devices, based on simple principles, are powerful at clearing out some of the toughest clogs that can afflict drains. The only tool more effective at eliminating heavy drainpipe clogs is the hydro-jetter, a more complex machine that blasts out high pressure water to clear away clogs.

If you cannot clear a drain clog on your own with a plunger, then you need to call up a professional plumber to address the problem with a drain snake. Don’t reach for liquid cleaners: they are acidic and can cause damage to the interior lining of your pipes. Let the experienced plumbers at Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling take care of your drain cleaning in Doylestown, PA.

How the Drain Snake Works

Drain snakes come in two basic types: manual and powered. The only difference between the two is the power source; otherwise they use the same mechanics to remove clogs.

The drain snake is made up of a long coil of metal wires that attaches to a crank on one end. The wires are flexible and can easily “snake” down the curved pipes of drains. A plumber runs the end of the drain snake down into the clogged drainpipe until it contacts the plug. The plumber then turns the crank (either by hand or with the motor), and the coil of wires screws into the clog. The action is similar to a corkscrew going into the cork of a wine bottle. Once the coil is imbedded into the clog, the plumber can either pull it back up through the drain to remove it, or move the wires around to break up the clog so it will wash down the drain.

Some drain snakes have multiple attachments for different kind of clogs. A plumber can determine which type will work best, as well as deciding if the job requires a motorized auger rather than a manual auger.

Call For Professional Drain Cleaning Service

Manual drain snakes are available in some hardware stores as well as online. (Motorized models are also available, but are usually too expensive for consumer use.) However, we don’t advise that you attempt to use a drain snake without training because you can potentially damage the pipe interior. Let a skilled plumber do the job, and it will be over fast with no problems.

A drain snake is only part of effective drain cleaning in Doylestown, PA. For comprehensive cleaning of all the build-up in your drains, call Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling. We offer complete drain cleaning services that will restore your plumbing to like-new condition.

What Are My Options for a Water Treatment System?

Monday, January 13th, 2014

Whole-house water treatment systems are an excellent way to get fresh, clean water without the worries about the contaminants that can filter in from the municipal water supply. Instead of spending money on bottled water or ineffective local filters, you can treat all the water entering your home at one time. You will not just get water that’s healthier to drink, you’ll get water that’s better for your appliances and fixtures.

There are many different options available for your whole-home water treatment system. We’ll go over some that Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling offers. If you are thinking of installing a water treatment system in Doylestown, PA, contact us and we’ll help you find the right one.

Water treatment system options

  • Water softeners: If the problem that afflicts your water supply is hard water—water with high levels of minerals such as magnesium and calcium suspended in it—then you will want to have a water softener installed. Hard water isn’t usually harmful to drink, but it can create serious problems in plumbing because of mineral deposits, and it can damage appliances like dishwashers and laundry machines. A water softener balances the chemicals in your water to add salt to soften it and eliminate the trouble of hard water.
  • Reverse osmosis systems: These units remove many small particles out of water that standard filters won’t catch. They work by creating two separate sections of water with different pressure levels, which forces the water through a semi-permeable membrane that filters out small contaminants. Reverse osmosis is especially helpful for water with high salinization levels.
  • Acid neutralizers: Acidic water is bad news all around, but there are special acid neutralizers that can eliminate this threat to you and your pipes. They won’t add excess minerals to your water if they receive a proper professional installation.
  • UV water disinfecting systems: The use of ultraviolet radiation is a safe and powerful way to eliminate bacteria, viruses, mold, e. coli, and other biological contaminants that can enter into your water and have a negative effect on your health. These systems do not introduce other chemicals into your water such as chlorine.

Have water testing done today

The first step you should take when you are thinking about having a water treatment system installed is to schedule water testing. Contact Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling to perform this service, which will discover what issues in your water require treatment. Using this information, we can help you select the water treatment system that will provide you with the cleanest, safest water possible. Causes of Uneven Heating

Monday, October 21st, 2013

The heating trouble people worry about the most is that their heaters will stop generating the same amount of warmth that they used to. However, a problem people consider less—and which ends up confounding them more—is when the heater appears to be operating normally, the heat amount seems unchanged, but some rooms are much colder than others.

There are a few reasons that you might be suffering from uneven heating. Our technicians at Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling have seen this often, and here are the most common reasons for why it occurs. Contact us for more help with heating in Doylestown, PA if you need it.

Trouble with vents

Let’s start with a simple explanation: blocked vents. If you use a forced air system like a furnace that blows air from vents, the problem might be with the vents themselves. Check to see that they are open in the rooms where the temperature feels lower. Furniture might have been moved to block the vents, or other objects may have been placed in their way.

A poorly sized heater

Now we’ll switch to a complex explanation: the heater is the wrong size for your home. This can be a problem if you had a poor installation service or if you added onto your house after your heating system was installed. A heater which is too small for the requirements of your home will not be able to reach all the rooms and warm them. A heater that’s too large will shut off before it can finish its cycle, and that can also lead to unheated rooms. An improperly sized heater will either need to be replaced or supplemented to keep your home comfortable.

Inferior home insulation

Is your home properly winterized? Because if you have poor insulation, all the heat your system can pour out won’t mean much: the heat will escape through the walls and windows, around the cracks of doors, and through the attic. Uneven heating is a warning sign that this is happening, since the poorly insulated rooms will feel much colder. Have new insulation put in or have the older insulation patched with work from a professional.

Uneven heating can be a simple fix—or a major project. Whichever way it goes, you can trust the trained staff at Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling to get to the bottom of the problem and offer a way to fix it. We’ve helped with heating Doylestown, PA for over 30 years, and we’d love you to join our family of satisfied clients.

Plumber’s Guide: Common Shower Problems

Monday, October 14th, 2013

Your daily shower is a routine you can’t miss. If you’ve got trouble with the plumbing in your shower, whether in the drain, showerhead, or faucet, you need to get it repaired as soon as possible. In this post, we’ll share with you some of the most common shower problems that plumbers deal with. This will help you prevent some of these issues and recognize how best to get them fixed.

If you find your shower suffering from any of these problems, then all you need to do is contact Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling and we’ll solve it for you.

  • Hair and soap scum clogs: By far the most frequent trouble people encounter with showers are drains that are slow or completely clogged. The main cause of this is a collection of hair and soap scum in the p-trap (the u-shaped curved pipe below the drain). Sometimes a plunger can clear the drain, but be cautious about trying to use liquid cleaner or a drain snake to fix the problem, since both can cause damage to the pipes. An obstinate shower clog will need a professional plumber. But you can help prevent these clogs with a drain cover that will prevent excess hair from getting down into the p-trap.
  • Reduced water flow: If the water from the showerhead isn’t coming out at the pressure you expect, there may be a problem with the faucet. The best fix for this is to get a high-flow faucet installed: ask a plumber about having this done. However, the problem may be in the pipes, such as silt and dirt that has gotten in through a break. Only a trained plumber has the tools and knowledge to remedy this.
  • Faucet leaks: Like any faucet, the one in your shower can start to develop problems like leaks. If you experience extensive leaking from the shower faucet, it may need new rings, seals, or gaskets. Unless you are trained to take apart and repair a faucet, don’t attempt to do this on your own because of the risk of causing further damage.

We know that shower problems can be extremely frustrating; getting professional assistance as soon as possible will ease your mind. At Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling, we back the work we do—whether on a shower or any other part of the plumbing in your home—with a satisfaction guarantee. Contact us today when you need a plumber in Doylestown, PA.

Air Conditioning Repair: What AC Noises May Mean

Monday, July 15th, 2013

Does your AC make a strange or unexpectedly loud noise during operation? Has it gotten louder over the years and is now unbearable during operation? While you can expect a certain amount of noise from your air conditioner, if it begins to make any strange sounds, you should get in touch with your HVAC technician. In some sense, you should see that sound as an advantage—many problems around the home do not let themselves be known until they are too far gone. If you view that noise as a warning signal that your AC needs the care of a professional air conditioning repair technician in Doylestown, PA.

Let’s take a look at a few sounds that you may come across during the service life of your AC:

  • Grinding: This is often a fairly grating sound, one that is immediately recognizable as an indication of damage. A grinding sound in your AC is probably related to dried-out bearings in your blower motor assembly. When dirt, dust, and grime enter into your motor, they can cause friction and overheating. If you think this is what’s going on, make sure you turn your AC off to prevent any further damage.
  • Buzzing; If you hear a buzzing sound around your AC, you might have a serious electrical problem. It might indicate an arcing issue, which can be hazardous to you and the integrity of your AC if not taken care of properly.
  • Loud banging: If it sounds like two pieces of metal are striking against one another in your AC, then that’s probably what’s going on. You may have a fan blade that has come loose or some other loose part that is being blown around your system.

It’s necessary to have a professional diagnose the sound that your AC is making so that you can be sure that the root of the problem is taken care of. Call Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling today for all of your Doylestown, PA air conditioning repair needs. We can make sure that your cooling system gets the attention it deserves.

When to Schedule Sewer Repair

Monday, April 29th, 2013

We often take the features of our modern plumbing for granted until they present a problem to our daily life. While our sewer systems are meant to last, having been constructed out of durable materials, over time they endure a lot of wear and tear, and may eventually need professional repair. Let’s look at some reasons to schedule sewer repair. Call Carney Plumbing, Heating & Cooling today if you think your sewer line may be in need of professional attention.

So, when should you schedule sewer repair for your Doylestown, PA home?

  • Leak: If you notice wet spots in your yard, or a foul odor wafting through your property, then your sewer line may be leaking into the ground. There are numerous causes for sewer leaks. If your wastewater system is old, then it may have collapsed to old age, or it may have become damaged because of shifting soil density and erosion, possibly from a nearby construction project. Alternatively, a tree root may have exerted enough force on the pipe’s exterior to penetrate it.
  • Clog: Clogs can occur suddenly, perhaps due to a non-organic object getting stuck in your drainage system, or by the slow accumulation of years of transporting wastewater. If you think you have a deep clog within your sewer, and the drains throughout your home are not flushing water, then your may need to have you sewer line inspected. Video camera inspection is the best way to see what’s going on underground.
  • Slow drain: Don’t settle for slow drainage out of your home. It might be caused by hard water, which tends to leaves mineral deposits within your pipes. Over time, these can accumulate and create a hardened lining that restricts the flow of wastewater. Routine drain cleaning is a great way to avoid slow drains and clogs.

If you have any doubts about your sewer line, then don’t hesitate to call a professional. When you need sewer repair in Doylestown, PA, call the experts at Carney Plumbing, Heating & Cooling!

How to Prevent Sewer Problems

Monday, April 8th, 2013

While we spend countless hours of time fiddling with the latest electronic gadgets, we often overlook the basic infrastructure of our Doylestown, PA homes. Our plumbing usually taken for granted—that is, of course, until we run into a problem. Along with the water supply system, our sewerage system comprises our basic plumbing, and provides the rapid and efficient disposal of wastewater out of the home and into the septic tank or municipal waste management system. Occasionally, whether due to age or damage, our sewerage system may require repairs. Let’s take a look at some causes for sewer repair. When you need professional service, call Carney Plumbing, Heating & Cooling!

  • Clogging. Hair, grease, food scraps, and even toys may find their way down the drains and into the sewer line. Such substances may not completely block the passage of wastewater in and of themselves, but when they accumulate with other substances, they can form a thick wall that may clog your plumbing entirely. The use of harsh chemicals to break up these blockages can often damage your plumbing, and will be useless in the case of a serious sewer line clog, which is far from the fixtures and drains within your home.
  • Inefficiency. While you may not have encountered a total blockage, there may be times when it seems as though your wastewater is very slow to drain. When a plunger or auger doesn’t seem to do the trick, the problem might be deep in your sewer line, well out of the reach of the homeowner’s tool-set. The problem may be accumulated organic waste or even mineral deposits, which have significantly reduced the aperture of the piping.
  • Root penetration. While we often think of trees as static, if slow-moving, objects, they are incredibly powerful. In an area of large trees with complex and extensive root systems, the risk of a root penetrating your sewer line is high. While roots move at relatively slow rates, they exert incredible pressure, and may crush or crack your sewer line. This can cause sewage to leak into your backyard, or significant reductions in the efficiency of wastewater disposal.

These are just a handful of possible problems in your sewerage system. For exceptional Doylestown, PA sewer repair, call Carney Plumbing, Heating & Cooling today!
