How Effective Is a Ductless Mini Split for Heating?

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

Ductless systems have become very popular with homeowners, particularly for cooling. However, some homeowners question the ability of a ductless system to effectively heat their homes. Understanding how a heat pump works helps to answer this question, but for any heating needs you may have, including repair, replacement, installation or maintenance, be sure to hire trained professionals. Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling technicians have been helping customers in New Hope with their heating needs since 1976, and we can help you, too. Call us today!

How Does a Ductless System Heat?

Ductless heating systems use heat pump technology to heat your home. Heat pumps work by transferring heat from one location to another. Refrigerant helps facilitate this transfer. During the winter months, the heat pump absorbs the heat in the surrounding air, concentrates it and then distributes the warm air into your home. During the summer, the heat pump absorbs the heat in your home and transfers it outside. The key to a heat pump’s ability to both heat and cool your home is a component called a reversing valve. This valve changes the directional flow of the refrigerant, which allows the heat pump to change modes. As the homeowner, all you have to do to change the mode is press a button on your dual-mode thermostat; the heat pump does the rest.

Can a Ductless System Heat Effectively?

The simple answer is yes, a ductless system can heat effectively. Here are some reasons why:

  • Customized heating – the indoor blowers in a ductless system operate individually; this allows you to set the temperature as you want it per area. In essence, ductless systems offer zone control to your home.
  • Great energy efficiency – heat pumps use only a small amount of electricity to operate, about a quarter of that of a whole-home air conditioner, and no fossil fuels. Additionally, using the indoor blowers allows you to use only the amount of heating you need, which can help reduce your energy usage.
  • Easily expanded systems – should you add on to your home, or want to have additional heating in another space, it is easy to add on to a ductless system. A single outdoor unit supports up to 4 indoor blowers, so as long as you have the outdoor support, all you have to do is add another blower.

Ductless systems are convenient, durable, energy efficient 2-for-1 systems.

The basics of video pipe inspection

The technological developments that permitted video pipe inspection in the first place are miniaturization and fiber optics. A miniaturized video camera and powerful LED light are fixed onto the end of a long and flexible fiber optic cable. This cable is then pushed down into a drain and sent deep into the plumbing. The video camera sends back a feed of the illuminated interior of the pipe to a monitor where a plumber can observe clearly conditions inside the plumbing.

Video pipe inspection has a number of uses that makes the job of the plumber easier and faster. It is indispensable for leak detection, allowing plumbers to pinpoint exactly where a leak is occurring so they can perform the least amount of excavation necessary to reach the leak. The video imagery also permits them to grasp the extent and type of the leak so they will know ahead of time how best to repair it.

Plumbers also find video pipe inspection invaluable for clogging and sewer issues. For extremely tough clogs, it takes a video camera to inspect the clog and find how best to approach clearing it. This takes away from guesswork and trial-by-error that could end up damaging the pipe. It also helps the plumbers know how best to take care of providing the pipe with a thorough cleansing. When sewer lines develop leaking or blockage that threatens a home’s entire wastewater system, strategically uses video inspection will locate what the trouble is (root infestations, aging pipe, etc.) so the plumbers will know the least invasive way to approach repairs.

The Advantages of Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioning

Friday, May 2nd, 2014

The hot weather is almost here. For some, the heat is just what they’ve been waiting for, but for others, it can be downright uncomfortable. Air conditioning is great for cooling off and keeping your body temperature regulated during the summer months, but if your property doesn’t have a duct-based heating/cooling system, your air conditioning choices have been limited – until now. Consider a ductless air conditioning installation in Bucks and/or Montgomery County.

The Ductless Air Conditioner

Your first thought may be that a ductless air conditioner equals a window air conditioner. You wouldn’t be wrong, but we’re talking about something much better: a ductless mini split.

A ductless air conditioner, also known as a ductless mini-split air conditioner, is a unit that allows for controlled air conditioning in your property without having to install a fully-ducted air conditioning system.

There are two components to a ductless air conditioner: the indoor unit, which blows and controls the cool air, and the outdoor unit, which contains the compressor/condenser. The outdoor unit can power up to 4 indoor blowers.

Indoor units can be placed on a wall or ceiling inside a room, and a conduit between the indoor and outdoor units holds the refrigerant tubing, suction tubing and condensate drain, and links the two units together.

Why Choose a Ductless Air Conditioner?

Ductless air conditioners are a great choice for properties that have non-ductless heat, such as older homes or multi-unit properties, where installing ducts is costly. They are also excellent for spaces that require retro-fitting.

Installation of a ductless air conditioner is much simpler as compared with a ducted system. First, the conduit length that runs between the components can be quite long – up to 50 feet apart – allowing for the indoor unit(s) to be installed in front rooms while the outdoor compressor resides in the back of the property. There is no messy ductwork to contend with, just the simple install and connection of the two components.

Second, the placement of the indoor unit(s) is/are also very flexible. The indoor component can be installed flush against a wall or ceiling, or suspended from a ceiling, including drop ceilings. There are also floor-standing models if needed.

Third, a single outdoor compressor can handle up to 4 indoor air blowers, and each blower can be programmed to maintain a consistent air temperature, boosting efficiency and saving you money.

Lastly, ductless air conditioners are safer than window units, as they do not provide a potential entrance to your property.

Stay Cool Without the Ductwork

A ductless air conditioner may be just what your property needs to stay cool and comfortable during the warm weather months. Interested in find out more?
