Signs That You Need a New Water Heater

Water heaters are incredibly sturdy systems, but they wear down over time. No matter how well you take care of your water heater, sooner or later you’re going to need to install a new one. You should be aware of the signs that your water heater is nearing the end of its lifespan; you don’t want to suddenly find yourself without hot water when it dies on you. So, let’s take a look at some of the signs that you need a new water heater.

Loss of Output

Even the largest tank water heaters can only hold a limited amount of hot water at a time. If you place enough demand on a water heater over a long enough period, you will eventually exhaust the supply and have to wait for more. The older a water heater gets, though, the less hot water it will be able to generate. If your water heater seems to be having trouble generating even a moderate amount of hot water, you may need to have it replaced.

Repair Costs

Water heaters need the occasional repair here and there throughout their lifespans. Normally, however, these repairs tend to only be necessary every few years. If your water heater is breaking down every few months, it’s a definite sign that you need a new system. It’s better to replace the system entirely than to have to replace it one part at a time.

Age

The average water heater lasts between 15 and 20 years, providing it gets regular maintenance and repairs when necessary. After that point, the system becomes increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain. If your water heater is older than 20 years, you should talk to a professional about whether or not it would be a good idea to replace it.
