What Are Termites?

Termites are wood-destroying insects that can cause significant structural damage to homes if left untreated. Known for their ability to silently consume wood from the inside out, they can go undetected for years, making infestations particularly costly. Understanding how termites infiltrate homes and how pest control experts can remove them is key to protecting your property.

How Termites Infiltrate a Home

Termites are a subterranean species and they infiltrate homes in search of food sources like wood, paper, and cellulose materials. They’re particularly efficient, so even though they might be small in stature, they work fast and will move through your home once they’ve gained access. Here’s how they typically enter:

  • Soil-to-Wood Contact: Subterranean termites build colonies in the soil and create mud tubes to access wood. Any wood that touches the ground, such as a deck post or wooden structure, provides termites with a direct pathway into the home.
  • Cracks in Foundations and Walls: Termites can enter through even the smallest cracks in a foundation or through gaps around utility lines and pipes. Once inside, they search for wood and other cellulose materials to consume.
  • Moisture and Leaky Pipes: Termites are attracted to moisture, so homes with poor drainage, leaky pipes, or high humidity levels are at greater risk for infestation. Damp wood, especially in basements or crawl spaces, is a prime target for termites.

How Pest Control Experts Remove Termites

A pest control expert will take a multi-step approach to effectively eliminate termites:

  1. Inspection: The first step is a thorough inspection to determine the type of termites, the extent of the infestation, and where they are entering the home.
  2. Bait Stations and Pesticides: Pest control specialists often install bait stations around the home’s perimeter to attract and poison termites. In some cases, they will apply liquid pesticides to the soil, creating a barrier that prevents termites from re-entering the home.
  3. Wood Treatment and Repair: Infested wood may need to be treated with chemical agents or, in severe cases, replaced to prevent further damage.

Together, we can protect your home and remove the termites entirely so you can have some peace of mind.
